The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is now scheduling limited Motor Vehicle large truck services by appointment only in response to the COVID-19 outbreak and the Governor’s emergency declaration. NDDOT has adjusted our services to support the continued movement of commerce and agricultural commodities which are critical to our state and nation. 

The Motor Vehicle office in Bismarck will begin scheduling appointments on Monday, April 6 and are only available for trucks weighing over 55,000 lbs. and vehicles (trucks) with registration weight changes. Bismarck appointments can be scheduled online at www.dot.nd.gov  or by calling NDDOT at 701-328-2725 or toll free 1-855-NDROADS (637-6237), Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Walk-ins will not be accepted. 

Motor Vehicle branch offices in Devils Lake, Dickinson, Fargo, Grafton, Grand Forks, Langdon, Minot and Rugby will also provide limited truck weight services by appointment only. The services are available for trucks weighing over 55,000 lbs. and vehicles (trucks) with registration weight changes. Governor Burgum’s Executive order 2020-07, waives the expiration date on all vehicle registrations and driver licenses which expired on or after March 1, 2020, until the declared disaster has ended.

Motor vehicle services such as license plates and titling can be done by mailing in paperwork. Vehicle renewals can be done online, at a self-service kiosk or by mail.

Other Motor Vehicle and Driver License items you can do online:

  • Renew motor vehicle registration.
  • Renew a driver license for operating a standard vehicle or motorcycle online, if over 21 and under the age of 65 and you don’t want a REAL ID.
  • Change your address on your driver license.
  • Replace a lost, stolen or damaged ND license.
  • Replace a vertical driver license after you are 21 to a horizontal driver license.
  • Schedule a driving test.
  • Schedule an appointment to renew a ND license, permit, or ID card.
